French Violin Labelled ‘Francois Barzoni a Chateau Thierry’ c.1910
Francois Barzoni violins were upper level trade instruments made expressly for Beare and Son of London. As is often the case with trade instruments we suspect the component parts may have been sourced from a variety of specialist workshops with final assembly, and/or varnishing, completed at the central ‘home’ workshop. They are generally of excellent quality, and like this one, usually made from beautiful tonewoods.
The stunning two piece maple back plate is stamped “F.B.” on the button; the sides and head are of similar wood to the back; the top of equally impressive spruce; the varnish is of a lovely warm gold colour, over a light gold ground.
This practically mint condition violin has a nice darkish lower register with clear, clean upper register which carries well. It would ideally suit the advanced or advancing student.
